02: Exercises & Methods

Exercise1: Matter – Emotion – Interest (group)

Within the group of four, each participant takes on each role or task once:

Person A: tells a (short) conflict situation in which he/she was involved.

Person B: listens actively and, after A finishes, relates the story in his/her own words at the level of the matter.

Person C: listens actively and, after A ends, states which emotions they perceive to have occurred in person A's story.

Person D: listens actively and, after A ends, states what interests they perceive to have been present in person A's story.

A responds to feedback from other participants.

Groups rotate until each participant has gone through roles A-D.

Exercise 2: Exercise to reflect on a conflict situation (individual)

  • Think of a problematic/conflict situation that is relevant to you at the moment.
  • Put yourself in the first-person position and look at what is happening from your own point of view. Imagine how the "other" person is behaving and pay attention to your own reactions, feelings and thoughts.
  • Now switch from the "I" position to the position of the "other". Look at yourself through his/her eyes. Be that person for a moment and feel the underlying attitudes and feelings. What is the positive intention behind this stance?
  • Now put yourself in the neutral observer position and observe the interaction between the two people. What does this interaction look like from a neutral point of view? What could you do differently in the first person position to make the relationship work differently?
  • Switch to the "I" position and also to the position of the "other" and try out the suggestions until you come up with a solution that is satisfactory to you.

Actually changing places, for example, by physically switching between different chairs, is helpful in this exercise.
